Enjoying Van Life on the East Coast of Florida

flyfishingGranny and I are in van-life groove enjoying our break from the Fly Fishing Show tour.  We rolled into Satellite Beach, FL Tuesday afternoon and stayed with our friends Frank and Linda Catino.  We watched a rocket launch from Cape Canaveral literally from their backyard.  It was a spectacular sight.  Then we hit their favorite Sushi/Thai restaurant, Siam Orchid Thai & Japanese, and enjoyed a great meal.

FloridaWednesday we moved into Long Point RV Park.  RV parks aren’t exactly our normal deals but we have not figured out anyway to boondock the beaches of FL.  The busy campground is really nice and on the mouth of the Indian River.  We can access the ocean beaches nearby within five minutes.

Satellite-Beach-FloridaFor the most part we’ve been chilling and catching up on things.  We met with our taxman today over the phone and got that job done.  I’ve restarted my shoulder PT which I lacked on lately.  We ran the beach twice this week.  There are tons of folks fishing but we’ve yet to see a fish caught.  We’ve rested and enjoyed 75° plus temps and sunny weather all week.

Catino-fly-fishingYesterday we enjoyed a real treat.  Frank took us fishing to Mosquito Lagoon right on the heals of Cape Canaveral.  This is a very beautiful and remote fishery of FL alongside Canaveral National Seashore.  We had perfect weather conditions of mostly sunny skies, 76° and a light 13 mph wind.

Mosquito-Lagoon-FloridaThe grassy flats are beautiful as are all the surroundings.  But sometimes everything is just a bit too “nice” and these can be times when fishing is lousy despite everything seeming perfect.  Today was just that day.  We saw a mere four redfish and no seatrout or snook.  I got good casts at each redfish and only one serious look at my fly.  I believe yesterday was a sleep day for all creatures of the ocean.

ManateeI’m not talking only fishy creatures sleeping.  I always observe the birds and animals too.  We saw lots of both.  All waterbirds were laying low including the herons.  We also saw lots of manatees and they weren’t doing too much either.

That’s all for now from FL.  I hope to do some more fishing at some point this week but we’ll see.  I have plenty of prep work for two speaking gigs here in FL next week then a busy Denver Fly Fishing Show.  Stay tuned!

  1. Jeff,

I lived in Southeast Florida for 40 years – now is a great time to stay there.

Good luck with the fishing – should be some big smoker kings in your area, trout, and pompano off the beach.

    Have fun!

    Tad

  2. You take what she gives you and nothing wrong with nature viewing. I think seeing a wild manatee would make a trip out for me!
