Flyfishing the Belfast Dam of South Africa

Belfast Dam South AfricaFor the first time this week here in South Africa we had a casual start to the day.  We got up around 6 AM and headed into Dullstroom and had a proper breakfast.  Then we drove about 20 minutes out of Dullstroom to Belfast and negotiated dirt roads to the Belfast Dam.  We launched Dan’s raft around 9 AM.

largemouth bass in South AfricaThe fishing was tough though.  We started fishing right where we put in the raft but all we caught were largemouth bass.  We moved many times but every time all we caught were more largemouth bass.  They were shallow and they were deep.  We couldn’t get away from them.

fly linesThe nuisance bass drove Dan out of his mind.  Up through today I’ve never seen anyone change flies as much as Dan, but today he took it a step further.  He changed Jerry’s line at least ten times experimenting with depth trying to find the trout over the bass.

We finally found the trout however.  They must have been in search of colder water than the bass and we found them where the river came in.  Instead of fishing sinking lines we ended up hand twisting nymphs on the floaters.

fly fishing guide Daniel FactorWe have now fished each of the four venues to be used in the World Masters Fly Fishing Championships held here in February and tonight we returned to Johannesburg.  We had a great dinner at a steakhouse in Nelson Mandela Square with my friends of FlyCastaway.  And tomorrow we’ll hit the famous Vaal River for a day of yellowfish.  Stoked!

bass shirtsChristmas is around the corner.  DON’T FORGET my Online Store has gifts for the angler that has everything!  I have painted over 60 species of fish now available on my coffee mugs and frosted beer steins.  There’re also my new Solar Flex shirts in both men’s and women’s.  AND my growing collection of fish decals can be purchased on Amazon.

Be sure to keep track of my upcoming travels around the world!

I started fly fishing at age 7 in the lakes and ponds of New England cutting my teeth on various sunfish, bass, crappie and stocked trout. I went to Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin, where I graduated with a Naturalist Degree while I discovered new fishing opportunities for pike, muskellunge, walleyes and various salmonids found in Lake Superior and its tributaries.

From there I headed west to work a few years in the Yellowstone region to simply work as much as most people fish and fish as much as most people work. I did just that, only it lasted over 20 years working at the Jack Dennis Fly Shop in Jackson, WY where I departed in 2009. Now it’s time to work for "The Man", working for myself that is.

I pursue my love to paint fish, lecture on every aspect of fly fishing you can imagine and host a few trips to some of the most exotic places you can think of. My ultimate goal is to catch as many species of fish on fly possible from freshwater to saltwater, throughout the world. I presently have taken over 440 species from over 60 countries!
